  • Patching vs Upgrading

Something I've seen an increasing amount of in the Ticket System of late is people patching their sites rather than upgrading. To make things a little clearer on what should be done, this is a very quick guide to when you should do what...

    Patching

Patching simply patches your existing version number - it does not upgrade your site. If you're running vB5.5.4 and you want to 'patch' to vB5.6.1 Patch Level 1, you CANNOT patch! You MUST UPGRADE....

If you're running vB5.6.1 and want to 'patch' to vB5.6.1 Patch Level 1, you can do this by downloading the Patch files only and uploading these to your server.

    Upgrading

Upgrading moves your site between version numbers, i.e. 5.6.0 to 5.6.1. If you're running an older version of vBulletin and want to move to the latest version you MUST upgrade. Download the full vB5 package from the 'Download vBulletin 5 Connect' link in the Members Area and follow the instructions in the 'vb5readme.html' file that's included in that ZIP file.

    Summary

Patching is for the SAME VERSION NUMBER ONLY. Anything else, you MUST upgrade.
