  • [Bug / Issue] Moving comments turned them into posts

My moderator moved a post with 2 comments. After moving the comments turned into posts.|
    Is this normal behavior?

At times, this is how it behaves. To be honest, we don't know the use cases that customers would prefer on this and haven't received a lot of feedback on the issue. We made some guesses on how to handle the issues but really don't really know how people want it handled.

There are a couple of issues open about how this could work: https://tracker.vbulletin.com/vbulle...sues/VBV-18041 https://tracker.vbulletin.com/vbulle...sues/VBV-17948

Comments are intended to be specific to the posts to which they are attached. That's kind of the point. It seems like if you need to move them they're not relevant to the post to which they were attached. That doesn't necessarily mean you want them as new posts but to me it's just awkward so I only have comments open to Staff members. They are only allowed to use them to comment on the specific post and only in a staff capacity. It avoids confusion.

I prefer when a post has comments, and it is moved, that it stays the same.

Making new posts out of these comments is unwanted.

vBulletin 5 uses a Node/Closure Hierarchy Tree. How each individual post is stored has little bearing on how it appears on the front-end. This is all dependent on its parent in the tree. How a Post displays depends on its position in the hierarchy. There are three ways any post is displayed within a Forum channel:
          • Topic Starter - Always the first post in a topic
          • Reply - Second level post after the topic starter.
          • Comment - Third level post attached to a specific reply.

Article, Blog, and Group Channels only allow two levels. The Reply view is omitted and this second level is displayed as comments.

If you move a Reply and it becomes a Topic Starter, then any Comments attached to it will become Replies. Everything has moved up one level in the hierarchy.

Likewise if you move a Topic Starter under another Topic Starter, it becomes a Reply and any replies to it become Comments. Everything moves down a level.

A Topic Starter isn't allowed to have Comments. There would be a missing level of Hierarchy.

If you want to learn a little about Closure and Hierarchy, you can view this article or this one. Closure is the third pattern discussed.

What we really need is to have people post case studies (examples) on why they are copying and merging posts along with their desired results.
