Editing article & 'publish now' results in new date - why doesn't it retain it's original date stamp?

I don't know why it doesn't retain its date. The workaround is to check the date before saving. This is a known bug and is in the issue tracker.

Publish saves the article and sets the date to the current date/time which is by design. For edits, simply save the article and the original date will be retained. As long as the Publish Date is prior to the current date/time, the article will show without needing to be published again.

This method of renewing date stamps for mere edits is confusing...
