These links don't exist in vBulletin 5 as you have stated. You can click on the link to the newest unread post in the topic list. It appears to the left of the forum title if there are unread posts in the topic. -
links from forumdisplay to additional thread pages
VB4 was showing links to additional pages of long threads right from forumdisplay. As you can see in my VB4 screenshot I had some threads with over 700 posts.
Now in VB5 these direct links are gone and you need to always click through the first page of that thread.
Any way to change that and bring those links back? I can't find any setting.

In vb4 I had the following in additional.css - this would ensure that links posted in threads (and only those links) would be underlined, which helps to distinguish from the rest of the text:
