  • Error when removing a link in an existing post

    Hello all

We (admins on a French forum) have encountered a strange (and new) thing : an existing post has been modified by .. (no idea of who and how) and a link has been added to the post. The author doesn't knows and I don't have the history...

An admin of our forum has modified the post and has tried to remove the link and ... it's not possible : by cliking on the Remove link then saving the post, vBulletin is saying "Please enter a valid URL" (I presume he think we're trying to add an empty link) but no, we're trying to remove an existing link posted by someone...

I've installed today vBulletin 5.4.0 and the problem remains.

    Can you please investigate ?

    Thanks.

That is a Link Content Topic. It is created by clicking the link icon in the top left corner of the editor. It is required and cannot be removed.

If they want inline urls, they should type it in or use BBCode with the rich text editing menu. You can show it by pressing the A icon at the top right of the editor.

      Thanks for this fast answer.

Can't be removed? Even for the author or an admin? Sounds strange to me...

That link was ... hacked (???) i.e. the author has mentioned to us that he has not typed this link, has tried to remove it (and was not able to) and same for us.

The author is saying it's not him and I, as admin, can't see any versioning like when we edit a post; we can see any versions (original till current). Here not.

So, there are two strange things :

      1. how this link was added by someone else? Can we check this i.e. can we believe the author of the post?
      2. how can we remove it. (I understand it's not possible (strange) so we're indeed editing it and replace the bad one by a link pointing to our forum).

      Thank you.

[Edit] What if the link points to an illegal site? No one can remove it? [/Edit]

The link was not added by someone else unless you have allowed users permissions to edit other people's posts. You should check this.

You can replace the link with another one, or delete the post completely.

A link content type must have a link. That's why it can't be removed. It isn't an ordinary post, it is a specific type of post that requires a link.
Ordinary text posts with a link embedded in them can have those links removed.

Thanks for this quick reaction (not really an answer; sorry)

[EDIT] We, moderators, have asked again (for the third time) to the author if he has or not type the link; now, after our third request, he has said yes, so I edit my post to remove that part; it's well a PEKBAC problem for that part. [/EDIT]

We already have to edit the post and type a new URL, since we can't leave it empty or remove it.

Here the author has mentioned he was not him ==> by deleting the post, we're "punishing" the person who has request our help so, no, not a valid option. It remains the edit option ... but, request feature: by editing the body message, vBulletin is telling "Last edition by ..." at the bottom which is great

But don't do that if we, as moderator, are replacing the link (either the title or the URL), nothing happens i.e. vBulletin doesn't manage that someone has updated the post.

Yes for the body, No for the link. Is it a bug or an inexisting feature (=> please add it for next versions )

          I ... didn't understand. I understand the sentence but, technically, I didn't understand.

I've tested it : on our forum we only provide one single button "New post", the URL is something like ".../new-content/...". It's a normal post (I suppose it is).
I (=the author) type a subject and a message and clic on save => it's a "normal post" right ?
I make a new post, exactly the same thing but this time, I also create on the "Link" button at the left top to add, as an extra info, a URL. This is a normal post with a link no ? (I know, you'll say no if I've correctly understood what you've said here above). But, for me, it's a normal post with, just, an extra info, an URL.

So, yes, sorry, I didn't understand why it's impossible to remove that extra info.

Now, no problem, I understand that, here, we're facing to an inexisting feature so, please, foresee it in the future.

          Thanks.

vBulletin 5 is based around content types. Everything is a content type.

You have text posts, which are ordinary posts.
You have event posts, which have an event that can be shown on the calendar. These must have an event, you can't delete it.
You have photo posts, which must have at least one photo in them, you can't delete the last one.
You have poll posts, which must have a poll.
And you have link posts, which must have a link.

What is needed is actually a means to change the content type of a post. There is already a feature request for this in the tracker.

For any other feature requests or improvements, please log them in the tracker. Just complete the summary and description fields, we will complete the rest:

            vB5 Improvement request

            vB5 New Feature
            http://tracker.vbulletin.com/secure/...91&issuetype=1

We take all suggestions into account when determining the feature set for new versions but we cannot confirm whether a particular feature will be included in a version.

              Hi

We had the problem again today. A new user has post a "Hello ... my name is ... I'm happy to be here ... " (which is allowed by our rules) and "My web agency is called ... " and has put a link to this site (not allowed, auto-promotion).

So, I've edited the post, remove the link, vBulletin disagree with this. Ok; I type a fake link (the link to our forum) and, no, not enough, because the name of the web agency is still there.

The only thing I can do (except if I'm wrong) is to remove the post and as first contact with our community, it's not really fun for the guy.

              Any solution ?

That is in their signature. You would need to edit that via the admincp in the normal way. That has nothing to do with links in posts.

As an aside though - if it's a spammer, I'm not sure why you're worrying about editing the post, just soft delete it.
