  • 404 on image attachment upload or display

Our forum now displays blank images and image uploads are blank too.

In Google Chrome console the error is:
Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 404 ()
for an example of the 404 url, on upload url is /forums/filedata/fetch?linkid=512602&type=thumb&cachebusterid=7076
    on display eg. /forums/filedata/fetch?filedataid=6745

Nothing helped so far. It happened after update to 5.3.1., but to our best knowledge likely not immediately but after a few days, and we are not aware of any forum settings or server settings changes.
Attachment folder has 777 access rights, path has never changed (worked in the past).

Forum is on an Nginx server.

What could possibly cause an issue like that?

If you're using the NGINX vhost file for your version of PHP, then you need to ask your Server Administrator if anything in the URL would trigger exploit protection modules on the server.

Note, if they upgraded the server to PHP 7.X, there is a new vhost file that needs to be used. It is located in the do_not_upload folder.
