Standard is exactly as your saying.

Personally with friendly URLs enabled on vb4 my links didn't redirect when I switched to vb5 on my site.

It's a price I paid and I'm not that disappointed because it was new but just wanted to make it clear that friendly urls do not redirect.

Topic id 1 in vB4 will node id (something else) in vB5, yes.

There is no showthread.php in vB5, it works completely differently, so no, that isn't possible.

There are also no URL options in vB5...the default one is all there is. The previous version only had options because some people wanted to use 'friendly' URLs, and others wanted to stick with the old vB3 URLs (which is the 'showthread.php' type). Since vB5 uses friendly URLs throughout, and old vB4 URLs redirect to those, therer is no need for any options.

OK, thanks for the fast reply and clarifying how they worked. So topic no. 1 is no longer topic #1 due to vb5?

Is there still a way of doing a foolproof link, like 'showthread.php?t=xxx'?

And how do I change URL layouts?

vBSEO was a third party add-on which we don't support...

Ant of the standard vB4 URLs will redirect to their new vB5 equivalents, but the vBSEO URLs will not.

Even allowing for that, the topic numbers in a vB5 install will not be the same as the topic numbers on a vB4 install...although the old ones should redirect to the new ones (except in the case of vBSEO, as mentioned above). In other words, you can't just take a node id from a vB5 URL and tack it onto showthread.php?t= , as that won't work.

On this topic, where can I change the URL layout so it's closer to how it used to be before I upgraded to vb5?

  • Former VBSEO links broken - showthread.php seems to not work

In the past, I could make a post with internal links using /showthread.php?t=1234 or /showthread.php?threadid=12345 etc.

These seem to no longer work. If I now grab a topic number from my current (vb5 default) URL, the threadid is 12345, it merely goes back to the homepage instead of going to an actual thread.

ie http://mysite.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1234 just takes me back to the main front page.

Am I writing it wrong or has it been discontinued and replaced, if so, is there another basic way of linking (ie not vanity urls)?
