So long time since, but this error is still happening on our forum. We are running version 5.4.1 now. I am noticing that the error seems to be more common for people that browse to the site WITH the www in front of it.
Due to the security placed on vBulletin's cookies, your browser will see http://www.site.tld as different from http://site.tld. Cookies may not be shared between the two. This is by design. Depending on the server and your browser, this may also break Javascript that is needed for some functions like logging in.

You need to set up a redirect so people only access your site from the URL specified in the AdminCP under Settings -> Options -> Site Name / URL / Contact Details. For best performance, the login URL should be the exact same as the site URL as well. If you want secure logins, then it is recommended that the entire site is run under SSL, not just logging in. Other services like Facebook, Google, and Apple are also starting to require SSL to interact with your website.

Symptoms include but are not limited to:
    1. People login, the page refreshes and they are not logged in.
    2. People login, the page refreshes and now there is a small window (See attachement above) where they are logged in, but the main site in the background shows them as not logged in.

Scroll down inside the login box to see the error message.

We have more and more users reporting this error now as well. Going to enable debug mode.

Did you notice there's a "That action cannot be completed" error message in the login box? Enable debug mode to see the actual error message.

But if that same user registers a new account, it works fine.

    Login issues - VB5

I recently upgraded my vb4.2 install to the latest 5 build. All looks to be working well except for some users. When they login the page refreshes and they are not logged in. Then they click on login again and where the username and password box should be, they see a section of a logged in session of the forums. Very odd. See attached video for better detail.
