Ask your hosting to increase your SQL packet size to at least 16MB and timeout limit to at least 30 seconds. This has been a common issue with 5.1.9 and while that may not resolve the underlying issue it's the place to start. My limits are set to 64MB and 60 seconds and I had no issues with the upgrade.

Typically in the php.ini file which requires root server access. Dedicated or VPS hosting may grant that level of access but shared hosting rarely does so.

If you put your site into debug mode, you can skip step 20 and rebuild your styles within the AdminCP. Putting your CSS back in the database also helps with this step.

I have the same problem. Upgrading from 4.2.3 to 5.1.9. Support can't help me!

It is caused by server configuration. Low execution time somewhere or less than 64 MB for scripts in PHP. Though 128 to 256 would be better for installs/upgrades. We're working on fixing it because of the number of styles included. Deleting unused styles in your database before upgrading could help. Removing themes from /core/install/themes/ would also help.

                    For the main problem .....

I solved it like this :

Step one : Via Server Control panel --->myphpadmin---> and looking for table "datastore"-----> and after you delete the row stylecache.

Step two : from "do_not_upload" directory (vbulletin package) you upload the tools.php into your admincp directory....you run it and you choose to rebuild your main style...your default style.

Step three : You rerun upgrade.php.....and DONE !!!
