  • Post gets truncated when entering special characters vBulletin 5.1.8

I'm using vBulletin 5.1.8 with php5.6.9 (without suhosin or mod_security enabled) and whenever anyone posts content with special characters (the latest example was a degrees sign) the post gets truncated just before the character. I've been through the forum and have tried the following:

Setting the posts table to be UTF-8 and collation to utf8_general_ci.
    Un-commenting $config['Mysqli']['charset'] = 'utf8'; in the config file.
Removing all entries from the Blank Character Stripper in the Censorship Options.

But nothing has worked, anyone experienced similar issues? The forum was originally v3.x and was upgraded 3 months ago

He hasn't been online for over two years so you may not get a response.
