      yes gzip enabled on server...other running sites on same server status shows gzip ON/Active

        That option doesn't use Apache's gzip. It uses the ZLIB library in PHP. It should be enabled by default but some servers disable it if they have mod_gzip or mod_deflate installed. If you're using mod_gzip or mod_deflate, then you should update your .htaccess file appropriately.
