I really hope one of you can help me with an emergency situation I have with my forum. Fortunately, I have many details to provide you, so hopefully you can put all the puzzle pieces together, as I can't... Thank you in advance.
Over the past 2 years I built a forum with hundreds of posts. Recently, as I was deleting the spam I got hit with a deletion of ALL the posts. So the forum now has zero posts. And nothing seems to be soft deleted, so everything is gone... Even more, if i re-add new posts and delete one... it deletes them all. So basically I cannot clean the spam without deleting everything - which brings me back to 0. When I delete, I get a error notification like the one attached (where you see ScamD..that's my forum - Scam Detector is the name of the forum).
Here is the details I have:
- As I got my programmer to look into the issue, we found an attack on my forum. An injection of a code that was done in the middle of November last year, 2013. It just acted now. I also attached a png file with an excrept from the hack posted.
- While doing more research into the issue, I found an email from vBulletin back on November 16, in which they asked everybody to reset the passwords because the whole system was the victim of this attack, not just mine. Unfortunately, this email from vBulletin went straight to my Junk folder, so I didn't see it at the time. Subsequently, i didn't change the password or upgraded the system, which led to the issue I have now.
- I am currently operating a vBulletin version 5.0.0.Beta 26.
- My Php version is 5.3.3-7.3+hw2
- I initially contacted vBulletin and I am thankful for a preliminary answer I got from Lynne, who said: "about the topics you lost, there is no way to get them back except to go back to a database backup."
Now... is this database something that I would have done it myself or it got stored automatically somewhere? Because I didn't do a manual database backup before. I did not fully understand and I apologize for that.
Besides this question above I would like to ask you all:
1. Is there a different way to have all the topics restored (I gratefully accept a longer answer than the one provided above, when it comes to the database)
2. How can I get rid of the bug that's still in there, so I can start posting in forum without the fear of having all the topics deleted everytime I delete spam? I know I have to upgrade to the newer version, but do I need to do any pathcing - I think a new patch was released in May - or any other virus removal techniques prior to that? What are the steps?
Any help would be appreciated. HUGELY.
Thank you,
Lawrence
