  • forum URL is not working as expected when we have www in it

    Hi,

    I have a vbulletin forum at mysitename.com/forum (this is not the actual website name). I could observe that when I enter the URL http://mysitename.com/forum, the latest activity tab shows all latest activities as expected, also I could login to the forum as expected. But when the URL is http://www.mysitename.com/forum, the latest activity tab shows no content found and also I am unable to login to the forum.

    Can you please throw some light on what could be the issue and how could we rectify the same. We want the http://www.mysitename.com/forum URLs also work properly, I mean allow us to login display tab contents correctly etc..Please help.

    Thanks!
    Sowmya

    It will only work correctly on the URL that you have set in the URL settings.

    You should arrange to redirect www to non-www, your host can arrange this.

    Alternatively you can choose to set a cookie domain in the admincp.

      If you use an Apache host the easiest way to force everyone to a non-www URL is with an .htaccess file.

      Some examples are here: http://www.htaccessbasics.com/force-www-nonwww-domain/

        Plesk (anyone still use that? I do!) also has a useful option where you can select this in a simple dropdown.

          Hi Mark and Joe,

          Thanks for your replies!!

          We decided to use the URLs with www and changed in the admincp settings. Now as expected the ones without www is not working fine.

          So I want to redirect all the mysitename.com/forum/xyz URLs to corresponding www URLs.

          Since we have a windows system I tried adding the below rule to the root and forum folder web.config still no luck. Can you please suggest.

          <rule name="Redirect non-www to www" patternSyntax="ECMAScript" stopProcessing="true">
          <match url=".*" />
          <conditions>
          <add input="{HTTP_HOST}" pattern="^mysitename.com/forum/$" />
          </conditions>
          <action type="Redirect" url="http://www.mysitename.com/forum/{R:0}" redirectType="Permanent" />
          </rule>

          Thanks!

            Honestly I don't have much experience with IIS- you did change mysitename.com to your actual website name?

            Not sure what kind of access you have but another way of doing this is described here- http://ynrajasekhar.blogspot.com/200...using-iis.html
