What logo requirements do you suggest we stick to?

I used Google but could only find articles from over a year ago.

Is saving as a .PNG file and making it transparent a good idea?

We do not specify any requirements for the logo, your header will grow to accommodate the logo that you upload. You would want a logo that fits into your design. Using a PNG is perfectly acceptable if it fits in with your design.
