  • Need advice with domain change

    Hi,

is it safe to modify domain to new domain trough Cpanel -> modify domains ?

I assume site URL and so are not changed automatically in vBulletin 5

so my question is what are the best steps to follow ?

    Thanks.

If it were my site I would:
    1. Setup the new domain DNS.
    2. Set the new domain DNS to redirect to the old domain.
    3. Post a notice about the upcoming change and encourage users to update their bookmarks.
    4. Wait several days.
    5. Change the URL in the AdminCP to the new domain.
    6. Remove the redirect from the new domain.
    7. Redirect the old domain to the new domain.
The redirects should be configurable either at your Domain Registrar or within cPanel.

If you have already changed domains, you can update your vBulletin URL using tools.php.

Hi Wayne thanks for your answer.

Because my forum is gambling related it get often blocked and I have to switch very quickly to the new domain name, I think in my case redirecting to old domain is not a wise decisions because my users will see maybe the blocked page again.

This is How I have done till now with vB4

      1. I create new account with new domain
      2. Copy everything from old domain to new domain
      3. I change database username and password in config.php
      4. I edit site URL with navicat MySQL software directly in database .
      5. Then I login to forum back-end end check if everything is ok.

I am now on vB5, it is not same as vB4 that's why I am asking this.

You should use the tools.php file to update the URL as stated above.
