Avatars and avatar system broken after upgrading from vb4 to vb5?

As you can see, the avatar for Jakub Schmidt (a test name) still has his avatar in the post in the bottom right, but it is not visible on his profile page. Also, when I go to select a new avatar for him, there is no menu of avatars for him to choose from as in vb4.

How do I 1. Make sure that all existing user avatars appear where they are supposed to and 2. Make the menu of avatars show up when selecting a replacement / new one?

vBulletin 5 does not support the Avatar Gallery. Users are expected to upload their own custom avatars. This is the standard operating procedure for websites at this time. Web Bandwidth isn't the same concern that it was 20 years ago.

You removed the gallery because people dont need to wait too long to upload images? Thats Crazy Logic. Standard operating procedure? Who are you copying?
At least you've kept the six ways to attach an image into a post so it lands anywhere it wants, and users need to research the interface before they can use it.

1. How do I rebuild thumbnails so they show up In the profile picture window? (thank Goodness avatars and profile pictures are the same thing now - and whoever youre copying decided to do that). As you can see, Jakub here already has an avatar. But parts of the software dont seem to realise that.

In addition to this, the majority of our customers over the last decade used custom avatars that their users uploaded. This is why we made the change.

The avatars for your users need to be manually uploaded to fully restore their functionality. Either through their Profile or you can do it in the AdminCP by editing each user.

Your customers? You mean vBulletin.com users? Whats that got to do with me? I am the administrator of a platform - I make the decisions about my website. You are trying to copy facebook? Is that who you're copying? Then make each post scroll with accordion expansion like normal - don't take things away that we need. Here is Jakub Schmidt's account in this image in the admincp. What about this avatar am I supposed to edit? The image location is /core/images/avatars. The avatar folder is one that the upgrade instructions from vb4 told us to keep. Is this the wrong path for your software to recognise? I havent touched the code. The avatars show on summary pages but not on posts or profile pages. You havent answered the question - again. No more comments about who you're copying - Please. I just want to fix this software after you tricked me into upgrading for hundreds of dollars.

PS All your image upload buttons on vBulletin.com are broken. I could recreate it with a description, but you would have to pay me for bugchecking.

I can't believe how bad this software is. Just give me the money back for my 4 licences and we'll call it quits.

In vBulletin 5, the Avatar needs to be in the /core/customavatars directory and either uploaded via the AdminCP or the User's Profile. These avatars have all the permissions and requirements of attachments and that is how they are treated. If you try to rely on allowing users to pick avatars from a page like in vBulletin 4, they will not appear in all locations.

Are the avatars that you're having a problem with newly uploaded after you upgraded? If not, you need to replace the images.

I gotta admit, I went to a bunch of trouble to get some nice, diverse icons so that people could be realtively anonymous and yet also be personalised to themselves. I got this avatar set from here and integrated it beautifully into our avatar picker. There are lots of communities of people who are at risk or vulnerable who want to remain anonymous and we totally support that on our site. Providing them some default, generic avatars helps them maintain that anonymity while distinguishing themselves from other users. Making it their job to find some icon to represent their identity in that sense is a burden. If you don't want your identities connected between sites, it's your job to find images that don't identify you and make them your avatar. I would save them that effort and make my site friendlier to them if I could.

When I click the 'continue' button on the avatar picker (shown on the right), nothing happens. I don't get an error, I don't get an avatar saved to my profile. It just doesn't do anything at all. (vbconnect 5.5.5). I have to either choose 'cancel' or I have to choose something other than a default avatar. Even in the developer tools in my browser I don't see a JavaScript event or anything.

Super disappointing. Not every community wants to force their users to upload avatars. Not every community even wants to LET the community upload avatars. The functionality seems like it's there, but then it kinda isn't. I haz sads.

There's a way of getting around that, although it may not be as easy as you'd like. If you create a photo album named "Avatars" and make it public then your Users will be able to access the avatars and download or upload them for their own use. It may not be as simple as having a radio button or checkbox but it would work.
