Thanks, I'll give this a go and hope I don't need to come back for more specifics on the method. Glenn, I'd appreciate some directions on that.
I have many younger users and people who transferred from a special social media platform and most of them know nothing about bulletin boards or making avatars. I did check vb.org but they only have 4 pages of mods for vb5 and nothing there covers this.

I have something like this using the existing Edit Avatar dialog and adding an option to add avatars from a pre-configured set of saved avatars on the server.

You can build something like this for your users using a custom Site Builder page. Upload your images and then create a new page. Use HTML to display the avatars and their complete URL on the page. Your users can copy the URL and paste it into the avatar upload form.
Someone with better knowledge of the API and PHP could probably create an Add-on that allowed this to be point and click.

Yes it has been removed in vBulletin 5, although any users who had such an avatar will continue to display it, as long as the images are still on the server.

I intended to upload some avatars for users to use who aren't familiar with creating custom avatars or setting one up on an image host and I remember the feature being around for years. Is there still a way to do it? As far as I can see it's only possible to allow users to define their own avatar now.
