I know this thread is three years old, but I was actually just looking at a way to solve this issue since we also have the "Use a Default Avatar" option showing on our site and one of our users asked me about it this week.

    Two options:
    1. If you want to continue using them, the user can right click on the avatar that is shown in the options. and then paste the link into the field above for "Copy and paste an image URL from a hosting site." This will set the user's avatar to the one selected from the list.
    2. If you want to get rid of the options entirely, delete the entries from the table Avatar in the database. once this table is empty, the option disappears.
If you really want to go crazy, you can maintain entries in the Avatar table manually and they will be added to the list and then you can use option 1 above.

That feature wasn't brough forward. Though it appears some work was done on bringing it forward and never removed. Will have to enter a bug report on this.

Hey Wayne Luke , could this be a hangover from VB3 and the upgrade process? I upgraded from 3.8.11 to 5.1.6 and my users also have the option to "Use a default avatar" but the links are all broken. The image paths point to directory ./forum/core/images/avatars which has a Thumbs folder and an index.html file but no actual images. That folder is included in the vb5 installation files but the "default" avatars are not. You can see what I see in the attached image. Mark.B has suggested the only way to remove this option is to change the code but that begs the question, if this is not part of the default codebase, and I have not installed any add-ons to my VB5, where is it coming from? Any suggestions.

Looking at the screenshots above, it appears you have some third-party addon installed that allows choosing an Avatar. The default dialog looks like this:

Name:	2020-01-06_9-36-07.png
Views:	84
Size:	31.1 KB
ID:	4431043

When choosing "Use Default Avatar", the user will be using this Avatar:

Name:	default_avatar_large.png
Views:	66
Size:	8.4 KB
ID:	4431044

This obviously isnt going to be re-implemented any time soon so how can I get rid of this option. All it does is bring up a bunch of broken image links that you can't even select anyway even when you re-upload them.
You cannot remove the option without modifying the code.

The only way this would be added back would be via the tracker entry above: http://tracker.vbulletin.com/browse/VBV-13558

Not many votes so far which implies there isn't much demand for it. However, please vote and comment on the tracker entry if you are keen to have this feature added.

I believe there is a modification over at https://vbmods.rocks that allows users to select from a number of pre-approved avatars.

You could always just create a custom page that shows the avatars in a grid with their URLs so users can copy that into the Avatar tool as well.

The Avatars get displayed but I can't do anything here. Changing the avatar this way doesn't work (I get the message "Upload of file failed.") and deleting also won't work as the "old" Avatar stays in the user-profile.

okay, I got that. tricky to explain my problems sometimes ...

Is there a way to remove the option then since it won't work anyway (makes no sense to have a selection of avataes as shown in the attached pics when you cant pick them in the end)

    Thanks!

You're mis-reading that...it says "Use default avatar", not "Use *a* default avatar".

It just means "delete my custom avatar and revert to using the default avatar", which is the one you currently have for your own account. vB3 and vB4 didn't have that, people with no avatars just didn't display anything. Now, they get a default picture. Nothing to do with the avatar gallery which, as I said, has been removed in vB5.
