We recently paid a developer to create an advertisement plug in for our forum. We want to make sure if we download the latest version (we are currently running 5.2.0 Patch Level 1 and are wanting to download Patch Level 2) that it won't erase the plug-in (or any important files, stylevars and settings). Any insight to this? Thanks.

No, patching the site will not affect the plugin I created for you. Not even upgrading. But if in case it does for some odd reason, I will fix it for free.
Important to remember before patching or upgrading, you should backup the database. -
