Canonical URL for thread pagination

Hi everyone,

let's suppose the address of my thread is www.myforum.com/forum/sports/101-swimming-50-m.
The canonical URL for this page will be www.myforum.com/forum/sports/101-swimming-50-m.

If the user is browsing the page 2, www.myforum.com/forum/sports/101-swimming-50-m/page2, the canonical URL will be www.myforum.com/forum/sports/101-swimming-50-m/page2.

Can I set the canonical URL pointing to the thread start page (www.myforum.com/forum/sports/101-swimming-50-m) for the pages 2, 3 and so on?

This should be considered a bug and an issue should be raised in JIRA.

Why should paginated content point the canonical URL to page 1? Page 2 and succeeding pages are not identical to or a subset of Page 1. Page 1 is not a "view all" page.

What should be done here is to use rel="next" and rel="prev" attributes instead of rel="canonical" attribute. For example, if you're on page 3, the link tags would be:

<link rel="prev" href="http://www.myforum.com/forum/sports/101-swimming-50-m/page2" />
<link rel="next" href="http://www.myforum.com/forum/sports/101-swimming-50-m/page4" />

And if you're on page 1, there should be no rel="prev" tag and if you're on last page, there should be no rel="next" tag.
