Gzip, how to?

Compressing the following resources with gzip could reduce their transfer size by 354.3KiB (77% reduction).

Compressing http://localhost/core/css.php?stylei...&ts=1355663882 could save 159.4KiB (83% reduction).
Compressing http://localhost/js/header-rollup.js?v=500b21 could save 94.0KiB (73% reduction).
Compressing http://localhost/core/css.php?stylei...&ts=1355663882 could save 51.3KiB (80% reduction).
Compressing http://localhost/ could save 27.5KiB (77% reduction).
Compressing http://localhost/js/footer-rollup.js?v=500b21 could save 20.4KiB (63% reduction).
Compressing http://localhost/auth/login-form?url...2Flocalhost%2F could save 1.7KiB (56% reduction).

How do I compress all of this for optimization? Does it all sit in a zip folder within the site? Or is it it compressed then put back into it's original place?

And pardon me for asking but why is it not all compressed in the workshop before it is allowed on the street?

You can configure mod_gzip to compress text/css - there is still performance work ongoing with vB5 so the best way to flag that up would be to raise it within our Tracker

I use this in my .htaccess file:

<IfModule mod_deflate.c>
    AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/css text/javascript application/x-javascript application/javascript text/x-component text/html text/richtext image/svg+xml text/plain text/xsd text/xsl text/xml image/x-icon application/json
</IfModule>

Serves the same purpose. Using gZip or mod_deflate sends the content to the web browser in a "zipped" or compressed state. This means it transfers quicker and uses less bandwidth. The browser will decompress the data as it receives it with generally little notice by the end user. The trick is to make sure the information isn't compressed twice or in a format the browser can't understand.

Thank you the pair of you, it has all been very helpful. I will try the code supplied by Mr Luke and I will go into the tracker again.

Keep up the difficult work. It has been only 2 or 3 weeks for me with VB 5 and my eyes are straining and my body aches for the time I spend in front of the computer trying to sort it out. It seems overly complicated and very off putting to most people I guess to be doing this programming stuff. For the average user, this is not an ideal 'working out of the box solution'.
Even when it goes gold (which hopefully for me is not too soon) I don't think it would be easily grasped by the majority of people. Which is a large number and a big market. Anyway, I digress.

So, far to get anything done is a major pain, back and forth with Firebug or equivalent, looking at classes and trying to identify what is what and where it is. Editing elements at the bottom of the screen and seeing things change at the top or somewhere other than where you want or need it to happen. It is a real chore, it is a monumental headache.
But having said all of that, it does keep me off the streets and out of the bars. It also stops me playing games, watching movies and even meeting my girlfriend. I lose endless nights sleep trying to figure it out and generally feel rather rough after a VB 5 session which incidentally is every night and most days.

Yes, it is a sad life for me but it is not my job. I don't have to do this. It is what I choose to do and I even pay for the privilege. It is you chaps who have to sort this little lot out.

Keep up the good work and more importantly, get it right....
