I upgraded my current board with a little over 500.000 threads and it just killed the server. Mysql tables are constantly being locked and written to temp. There are major issues with medium size forums right now on beta 11.
Maintenance tab you are not able to update thread count and so on.

You might consider switching to InnoDB if you're experiencing too many table locks.
Also try using mysqli in your core/includes/config.php file. It is generally more efficient.
