How do I change the color of the usernames?

You can do this based on usergroups. Go to AdminCP > Usergroups > Usergroup Manager > [Choose your usergroup] > Username HTML Markup.
There you can enter some HTML tags for color changes. Hit the questionmark for more information about this.

I wrote the html as suggested(even copy and pasted) but the only color change was the username in the profile not in the online users list is there another spot for that?

The names in the Member List and on the Who's Online page are all the same for every user. Check this forum for example: The staff has the same color like every user there.

As far as I know this can't be changed by adding HTML tags somewhere in the AdminCP. It would require custom work.

Yes, that's correct. You can't easily make a global change, or a per usergroup change globally.

You can add custom css to change individual instances of usernames (eg, Who's Online, last post info), but it would be all usernames, not specific usergroups.

Yes, once you know the css to change it goes in there.

for all names, users and adminstrators,mods etc there must be a css that makes those names a color. mine are blue as yours are but lighter obviously to put in custom css i would be changing the color, so the color must be written somewhere.
