Importing CSV; passwords; user groups

Hi,

I'm attempting to import users in a CSV file, via Impex.

1) When importing in either of these formats

username, email, password OR
email, username, password

the members appear within the user manager panel, but the combination of username and password can't successfully login.

2) When viewing within the user manager panel, no password shows up for the imported members.

(Again, this is a simple CSV, with no encryption of any kind.)

Q: How do I get the password included with a newly imported member to a) work and b) appear in the user panel?

3) Q: If it's necessary to send users an invitation to create a new password, is the link below sufficient?

4) Q: When importing large lists of members, is it possible to specify those members' User Groups en masse?

1. Not sure what you mean.

2. Passwords are never shown because they are hashed.

3. You can send a mass email with the link to reset their passwords:

http://www.yoursite.com/forums/login.php?do=lostpw

Using your domain and URL of course.

4. No sorry, there is no option to do that.

When I'm importing the username and password via Impex, the username and password can't log into vbulletin. Basically, the password doesn't work.

So the &email=$email part isn't needed?

What does the &email=$email part specifically do?

If you
a)
can't assign User Groups to a large list from within the admin control panel;
and
b) can't move an entire group into another group;

is it possible to send the members of a given list the URL of a hidden link that would enable them to register for free (as opposed to those others who must join through some standard paying link)?

1. This means you are doing something wrong. Unfortunately I have no idea what that is. I have tested the text importer myself and it does work.

2. Sorry I have no idea where you got the &email=$email part from.

3. Users are imported in an imported usergroup. After the import you can either move those users into another group, ot delete the imported group and they will be moved to Registered.

4. There are no 'hidden' registration links. Sorry.

I am using a simple CSV file, of this format:

"Username","Email","Password"
"randomuser1","[email protected]","passwordof9orsodigits"
"randomuser2","[email protected]","passwordof6orsodigits"

I am FTPing the CSV into same directory that holds admincp.

I hit "Import", get taken to the Impex interface, hit the button for Module 1, specify the targeted CSV file;
hit the button for Module 2; specify the minimal number of records to accept; specify the sequence for the fields (in this case, username, email, password); hit Import...

the system reports that the correct number of files is imported; the user manager can find a given user based on username....

but the passwords sent with those usernames don't work.

What is it that I am doing wrong?

I got this from the example in the vB manual, specifically this page:

Can this only be done one record at a time, or is there some way to move every member of Imported Group to some Special Group?



, ot delete the imported group and they will be moved to Registered.

Is there any way to move the members of Registered to some Special Group?

1. Try removing the quotation marks and the space in the password.

3. Yes, this is a standard feature in vB:

Admin CP -> Users -> Prune/Move Users
