  • Import txt file - format?

Any clues as to the format of the txt file?

Doesn't appear to say what the format of the txt / CSV file has to be!
    Regards

    Steve.

That is a good question. I never got my head around that too,. hopefully a designer or developer could shed a bit of light on this.

ImpEx will allow importing Users only when importing from a text file.

The informtion that can be Imported is:
      - Username (Optional, if not given, email address is used)
      - Email Address (Mandatory)
      - Password (Optional, either plain text or MD5 hashed)
      - External (User)Id. (Optional, numeric, when used will be stored as import_id in the user table for reference to an old id (non-vB) for that user).

You can choose the delimiter character used in your file.

You can set what information is in each column (up to 4 columns, seperated by the delimiter character). So the format of the importfile is much up to you.

No but they will all end up in the Imported Users usergroup (assuming now, not actually tested), and from there you can easily move them to the correct group.

This will depend on what you want to do:
              - If you want to move each member to a different Usergroup, then it will be manual
              - If you want them all to move into 1 other Usergroup, Use the Move / Prune users function.
              - If you want them all to go into the Registered Users usergroup, simply delete the Imported Users usergroup
              - If you have now somehwere stored these users in "groups", simply use ImpEx a few times, create a seperate txt-file with all the users for each group, Import them, move all users from Imported Users to the group they belong to, and start again with the next group of users.

Importing users is fairly useful ...

The CSV importer was requested by sysadmins who pre populate boards with simple users accounts, not from other forum systems, or admins that were importing users with specific group permissions and settings.

You can keep user groups, if you import the users in batches of users then move them to the group you have created for them before importing the next batch/group.

It's a tool, it is about how you use it.

Yeah, I'll probably do them in batches then.

It just would be good if you could specify usergroups to assign them to as they were being imported!

True, though the original idea was to keep it as simple and basic as possible.

Create a usergroup, import the batch, move from usergroup X -> Y, delete X, impex will recreated it on the next batch, then import from X -> Z and so on.
