Hello,
I have done one import prior to vBulletin. I started with UBB, then to phpBB2. The import function came packaged with phpBB2 and it done everything automatically after I entered some information.
For the vBulletin import, I found it to be a very tedious and manual process. I had to install Impex and the process wasn't that smooth either as there were quite a few bumps along the way. I don't recall exactly what were the problems because it was like 2 months ago when I did it. At the moment, I'm still using phpBB2 because I wasn't entirely too comfortable with all the functionalities (experienced a few of the early bugs of 3.5.0) and because I was a bit busy, the migration still has not been done.
I'm planning to do the final migration this weekend so I'm reviewing the steps now. And as I do that I'll recall what exact problems I experienced. Some examples are:
-Use of terminologies such as "importid", "importpostid", or something id....
-The following instructions are somewhat confusing. So what is the difference between associating and merging? I suppose by associating it means that there are still two accounts of the same user. But why not merge them?
-Then it goes on with the following:
But aren't we supposed to be only using Impex? Which importer is this paragraph referring to?
-There is a warning of the following indicating that any associated or merged users will be deleted on subsequent imports:
This explains why it says
a few paragraphs prior. However, it also says
. Okay now I'm a bit confused. So if my admin account on both vBulletin and phpBB have the same e-mail address, then Impex will automatically associate them, but not exactly merge them... Um... And this also means that after the trial import, my admin account on vBulletin will be deleted?
See where I'm getting at? I'm only about halfway down the page on http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=116398 and I'm already confused. I never had this problem when importing to phpBB.
I also would like to add I find the manual of vBulletin a bit difficult to read. Grammar and spelling mistakes.....
Thanks.

The second module is for associating users, this is a manual way of linking imported users to existing users. This will only need to be done if you have existing users you would like to associate to. NEVER associate with an vBulletin admin user during an import, wait till the import is finished and all is well, then use the admincp to merge the users.
Also the association only needs to be performed if the users you are trying to associate have a different email address, during the user import module ImpEx can be told to merge users who have the same email address, this is a lot faster and easier than manually associating them.

If the importer you are using doesn't not have the auto associate function in the user import module, check the notes on the status thread, if it is not mentioned in the development notes at the bottom of the post, make a request for it to be retro fitted to the importer you want to use, if it hasn't been already.
-There is a warning of the following indicating that any associated or merged users will be deleted on subsequent imports:
If you have associated or merged users, the original vBulletin users will now have a importuserid, re-running the import user module will delete these users, if you don't have any associated users this isn't an issue.
