Crashed our server!

Hi guys,

I'm trying to import about 15,000 members, and 40,000~ posts from phpBB 2.0.11. However, I run this script from the browser;

/impex/install.php

... and it put my server load up to 130!!!!! What gives? :|

vBulletin ImpEx System doesn't come with an install file. So you should receive a 404 error.

Sorry, I mean't index.php ....

I was just running it in the browser with;

http://www.oursite.com/new/impex/index.php

... and it just hung for ages, and then crashed the server (I was doing a "top" in SSH, and I saw it get to 130 AVG, before it crashed :|).

TIA for any suggestions... I really want to get vB working on this site today (the core script is all installed fine, but getting the posts imported is prooving to be more of a pain).

1) Do not browse to impex directly.

2) Read the HOWTO and delete the systems folders you don't need.

One thing I did which seemed to help my import a lot was to edit the /etc/php.ini file. Look for this line:
memory_limit=8M
I changed it to:
memory_limit=32M
then restarted apache. When I was done the import, I just reset it. This change fixed a lot of problems and crashes I had while doing a large import (6K users, 800K posts).

vBulletin likes 16, 32 is better.

ImpEx will take all it can, turning off the error checking will help a lot.

I've removed the folders that I don't need... but according to the HOWTO, it says that it should show up in my "Import / Maintainance ==> Import/Export" ... but I still can't see it :/

put the /impex dir and all its files and all its sub dirs and files etc, in your vBulletin folder, same one that admincp is in.

hmmmmmmmmm ok, well that looks ok to me.

What file extensions are you using for vBulletin and ImpEx ? Are they both .php or did you download one as .php and the other as .html ?

I'm using .php for both. AFAIK, we don't have anything running on the server, which would cause the pages to get cached (I've seen this before with mod_perl, and Perl scripts).

If you don't mind taking a look... I have no problem with providing you access (I know you don't have to, but it would be much appreciated ).

BTW, I believe we are currently running almost the latest version of PHP and MySQL (our host is very good at keeping the software updated ).
