    It turns out that sometimes my forum is for a while displaying a database error and in my email I am receiving this notification:

    MySQL server has gone away

    This is a server error, and you should contact your host.

    Most likely a setting such as max_execution_time will need to be changed, but the hosts are the ones who can change this.

      I checked in php.ini and it looks like this:
      max_execution_time = 30
      What setting do you recommend?

        The cPanel default for max_execution_time is 90 (seconds).
