I have a long established VBulletin 4 with a substantial database of posts and users. Due to difficulties I won't go into here, I need to change the entire website domain name. Is it possible to change the domain name (not using two but dropping the original) and continue using the same installation, database, etc.?

Yes, it is possible. You will want to change the domain URL in AdminCP > Settings > Options > Site Name / URL / Contact Details first before using the database on the new domain.
