    Registering with an IPV6 IP

    Hi

Not sure if this is a vB 4.2.2 issue or an issue with my server firewall, (CSF)

I have had a person try to register with my forum but gets "The administrator has banned your IP" message... It looks like his IP address is an IPV6 IP which as far as I know I have not banned... Is this a vB4 issue?

If it is a CSF issue I need to find out how to allow

What is their full IP address?

vBulletin doesn't explicitly support IPv6 but the value should be truncated to fit the field. If someone else has a similar truncation and you banned them under Settings -> Options -> User Banning Options, it would ban this user as well. However, that is the only case. We treat IP addresses as simple strings.

      Hi Wayne

He has given me two IP's

      2602:302:d193:6920:bdbf:edd4:24f2:a324
      2602:302:d193:6920:f4c8:c9da:a9fa:f938

Never had this before in all the time using vBulletin, I do have quite a few normal IP4 IP's banned

Would be nice if I can allow him to register

Both of those IP addresses should be acceptable. vBulletin 4 stores 40-45 characters of the IP address depending on the table. As I said we store them as strings only. If you're blocking a portion of an ip in your system, you might try removing it. Or you can temporarily remove all IP bans to see if that helps.

You can also create an account for him.... In the AdminCP go to Users -> Add New User.

I have checked the bloked IP list and see nothing that looks like his IP..

I forgot all about just adding him as a member, will try that now

          Thanks for the advice..

          This is what he gets..

vB 4.2.2 has nothing in it to handle (or store) IPv6 addresses, so all kinds of odd errors are likely.

Thank you, I have added him manually as a member, but so far he has not replied... Will see if that helps.

It is strange nobody else has had this issue joining my site, unless IPV6 are still rare At least if manually adding works I will be able to sort it in the future

Still fairly rare actually. Google reports under 15% of the internet uses IPv6.

Strange development... I deleted all the IP's and he managed to register and log in OK... When I checked his registration it showed a totally different IP even though he registered on the same network... The IP was 45.25.54.146 and it just so happened I had three IPs in the banned list..
                  45.242.108.201
                  45.242.*
                  45.2*
So the bottom one would be the culprit... now added all back except the above...

Would anything convert the IPV6 IP to the above style?

Now I have added them back I have asked if the can try logging out, close browser then try to log in...

You really need to get onto 4.2.4 which has better handling of this scenario, as Paul has mentioned above.

vB 4.2.5 would be better for IPv6 stuff in general.

Without knowing the IPv6 address of the user at the time, its hard to even guess why they would be banned.

That is an IPv4 address... It appears that his Internet Provider is using IPv6 internally and then IPv4 addresses when communicating to the internet at large. They can reuse the IPv4 addresses in a proxy setting so thousands of customers can use the same IP address. This is a very common scenario.

By blocking 45.2*, you blocked his IP address and he couldn't register.

It does seem seem strange, he sent me a screen shot which still showed the IPV6, so maybe his ISP does change things...
