  • Switching http to https on existing install

Hello, I searched for threads on this topic and found bits and pieces but not a recent definitive checklist or guide so thought I'd post here.

I have an existing and active vB4 forum for a paid membership site that was installed on an http domain a few years back. Now I've added an SSL cert and moved over the site to https except for the forums. My concern is causing any interruption/errors for existing customers so I was wondering if someone could provide the steps to ensure a smooth transition.

Hopefully this can serve as a guide for others in the same situation.

    Thanks in advance!

I had no issues, I just changed added https to the site in the admin panel and replaced any mentions of http:// with https:// in my css. The one thing I encountered was images from other sites in phpbb caused a mix content warning. I created an image proxy and haven't had any issues. My site has been full https for a little over 2 years. I get over 100k pageviews a day and have over 2.6 million post since 2011, so I think you will be fine no matter your site size.

My webpage also runs over SSL ( https://guitarbend.com ). No problems. Don't forget .htaccess 301 redirections from http to https. It's necessary for SEO... very important!.

This is exactly what I would like to do, but how do you create an image proxy to avoid the warning messages that happened the last time I tried this?

Thanks for that, neither of those seem to be straight forward to me so I think I will just forget the idea.

Just letting you know that an image proxy/cache is included in Vb5, but I'm sure that does you no good while you're using Vb4.

Again, thank you, though I suspect that may be a little tricky and half the forum probably wouldn't work if I did that......
I expect one day I will have to investigate what will and what won't work if I upgrade.
          Regards

You would want to run your entire site under HTTPS. Anything on your server would continue to work properly.

The issue with mixed content is when you bring content from others sites. More and more sites are going to HTTPS so this problem becomes less meaningful over time. However until the web goes completely to HTTPS, anything loaded from an HTTP site can cause a mixed content issue. Browsers have settings to ignore this or the content can be updated to reflect the HTTPS url if provided.

              Hi Wayne
I have been trying a vb 5.2.5 demo tonight, I am very impressed. So easy to edit things.
I am going to work out what add-ons won't be required any more and which ones just aren't available for 5.2.5.
The https issue might not be as big a problem as I initially thought.
I have links on my forum to a NAS but they are https, youtube, again https, all files and images would be https so it may work just fine.
              Regards
              Trevor
