  • Copying a vBulletin Forum

I own a vB forum but after having a disagreement with another Admin I no longer have access to it. Not only has he banned my forum account I also cannot access the cPanel. The host is not helping me as I'm not the account holder (yes completely foolish).

I've changed DNS to point to my host (I have other websites I host) and I've uploaded a backup of the website, but there are 10+ years of posts and information that I cannot access or move to my own host. Without the database I know I'm pretty much stuck... but I'm wondering if any of the experts on here can suggest anything?

Without access to the hosting account there is nothing you can do except report him to vbulletin for using your license but he effectively owns the database and there is nothing to stop him buying his own license.

If you give an admin (or anyone) access to the hosting account you are giving him the ability to take over your forum and lock you out.

Thanks donald1234 I had a feeling that was the case I'm attempted to download a copy of the forum using HTTrack but I get the impression this isn't going to work correctly.

        Puntoboy HTTrack will not work.

You need to have access to that cPanel account where the files and database are hosted.
BACKUPS are really important. You should have it as a partner.
Backup is the next possible way to get the forum. And you should have the domain under your name. Thats the most important.

Thanks starme I had a feeling that was the case.

It doesn't look like I will get access to the cPanel.

Do you have the main super admin account? or any admin account?
If your partner is the main owner of the forum, I doubt you can still retrieve it..
Can you PM me the forum URL?

I'm afraid I don't have anything. He banned my account on the forum and I never had access to the host.

Then while you do own the license, you wouldn't have much of a claim on the contents of the site, unfortunately

The annoying thing is I used to have all the access, hosted with my host, but a few years ago we decided to move it all to a cheaper host. But until now I never needed access to it.

Guess I just have to hope he changes his mind and gives me access

If you can deny him the domain, that will cause him a lot of trouble, sure he can buy another domain but he will be starting from scratch as he wont be able to redirect any of the indexed URL's

Do you own the domain/hosting? Are you the one paying for it?

I own the domains and pay for those. Which I have already redirected to my own host. The hosting I'm afraid is different. I don't have any access to that or pay for it. It was moved to a new host and he used the Club PayPal to pay for it. I'm already in discussion with PayPal about getting access to that as well but again, not promising. Luckily there's not much money in there.

If you're not paying for it, its not your property in most cases. You're stuck starting a new site, unless you can get that database back somehow.

It was being paid for by a shared business PayPal account. But I get your point. Thanks.
