  • [Forum] Can anyone help with an unwanted ad.

    I am a novice at php - in fact almost useless - I can do basic customizations.
    I have just lost all my customizations, I inserted a google analytics script into the header and it
    moved stuff about so I removed it.
    It left me with a banner ad from AdMedia, I don't know how it got there or where it came from,
    I assumed it was linked to the Google script so I disabled google ads. That didn't work and I searched for the ads location but couldn't locate it.
    The coding in header template revealed nothing - neither in the headerincludes.
    So I deleted the forum and reinstalled but the banner is still there, I have lost all my customisations by reverting the templates.
    Can't find any info anywhere on the forums of how to deal with this problem, I can get the host to restore the database but
    that will take 2 days. Anyone can tell me how to get rid of the ad that appeared form no-where
    (I hate VB it's not at all user friendly, everything I touch ends up causing further problems).

    I have been trying for half an hour to insert a link on this page or an image - is it restricted?

    Do this:

    To find the template to modify, do this - vboptions > General Settings > Add Template Name in HTML Comments > set to Yes . Then go back to your page and view the source code and you will see the name of the template called around your part of the code. (Sometimes the template is the one mentioned at the very top of the page source.)

    And now go find the stuff right above or below the add. See if there are template tags around the ad and then you can go in and edit that template.

    Please don't PM or VM me for support - I only help out in the threads.

    If I post CSS and you don't know where it goes, throw it into the additional.css template.

      Thank you Lynne

      But still no neare, I have scanned that page quite a few times maybe I am missing it, even tried to compare it with a friends vB forum - same page but I can't pin-point the ad. Thing is how did it get there?

      Anyway - you can see on the image that the text immediately above and below are here in the coding, but I can't pin-point the ad. Highlighted!!

      <div id="pagetitle">
      <h1>London Forum and Messageboard.</h1>
      <pid="welcomemessage"class="description">Welcome to the London Forum and Messageboard..</p>
      </div>
      <div id="content_container" class=" ">
      <div id="content" >

      <!-- main -->
      <ol id="forums" class="floatcontainer">
      <!-- BEGIN TEMPLATE: forumhome_forumbit_level1_nopost -->
      <li class="forumbit_nopost old L1" id="cat1">
      <div class="forumhead foruminfo L1 collapse">
      <h2>
      <span class="forumtitle"><a href="forumdisplay.php?1-Todays-London">Todays London</a></span>
      <span class="forumthreadpost">Threads / Posts&nbsp;</span>
      <span class="forumlastpost">Last Post</span>

      <a class="collapse" id="collapse_c_cat1" href="forum.php#top"><img src="images/buttons/collapse_40b.png" alt="" /></a>

      </h2>
      <div class="forumrowdata">
      <p class="subforumdescription">The views expressed on these forums are the views of the posters and not of Todays London.</p>

      </div>

      </div>

      Just making it more readable.

      Lastest Edit: I have scanned the page from top to bottom - I can't find the ad - It' says ads by AdMedia, I haven't put that there, I am baffled and a bit miffed can't get rid of it. If you want I can link the page for you to have a look.

      I have asked my host to do a dbrestore but that shouldn't be the solution, it should be editable.

      Lynne

      This AdMedia thing has come with the VBulletin download it's one of your plants.

      Can you get someone to get rid of it has it's very much buried somewhere - I didn't ask for it and don't want it.

      If I turn off google ads it switches them back on to show banners adds and I can't override It. I assume it has something to do with VB as it controls the settings and it's hidden,

      http://experienced-people.net/forums...Media-Provider

      Has this got something to do with this Skimlinks, if it has how do I turn it off, this is advertising on my site without permission.

      - - - Updated - - -

      Well the problem righted itself after 11 hours and wrecking my board. AdMedia's banner ad disappeared as mysteriously as it came.

      Only it hasn't really gone, the last thing to load when I load my forum page is in.admedia.com (bottom left hand corner, for those with 4.2 in the add-on bar). It looks like the latest version of vBulletin comes complete with Subliminal Advertising or is it called malaware, oh well as long as it doesn't ruin my customization again.

      Things folk will do for money.

      Latest Edit: VBulletin please do something about this unwanted advertising, it sticks a banner on the forom home page and pushes the forum dowm and I can't get rid of it. If it doesn't load it leaves this message
      502 Bad Gateway (that big as well]

      a really don't want subliminal advertising on the site - especially if it doesn't work properly. It makes me look cheap in front of my users it makes the site look cheap and nasty.

      Thank you, very dissatisfied with the waste 11 hours trying to fix a problem created by vbulletin installing malaware.

        We do not add any advertising into the software.

          Yes I know - spoke with a support guy today and worked out the problem.

          It wasn't anything to do with the vbulletin upgrade, sometime during the upgrade firefox had picked up a pretty awesome piece of malaware. It was from AdMedia and it inserted banners into your web pages from the browser. Well something like that.

              Same here, only I think the malware is in the PC where it is common to all browsers, I was having the issue with Chrome and IE8. Strange, it simply added a banner to the bottom of forums I was viewing, vB as well as phpBB.
