[Forum] How long does the REINDEX of the Search supposed to take? 2 days?

We are running Version 4.2.0 Patch Level 2

How long does the REINDEX of the Search supposed to take? 2 days?

In the AdminCP it reads the following:

"To rebuild the search index . . . This can be done via Maintenance > Update Counters. Reindex can take a long time for large boards."

Question 1: The last time I did this, it took 1-2 days. Is this normal for a board with 500,000 posts ??

Question 2: While the Reindexing is running during the day, are any other forum functions affected whereas the forum would not operate as usual?

Question 3: Is there a backup provision of the current Search Index (which is required to be deleted before rebuild can start) that can be restored at a later time should the reindex and rebuild fail?

Question 4: The Search Rebuild option box titled 'NUMBER OF ITEMS PER BATCH" has a default of 250. The last time I tried lowering it to 100 to see if the server would get all the way thru. But as the 100 per batch rolled along for an hour or two, it gradually started to roll along slower and slower and slower to where it eventually stopped. I am not sure why or what else I could have done.

    Thank you,

    David

Install Digitalpoint Sphinx search and it will take minutes instead of days.

Using Sphinx Search is going to take some time for me to make that decision, and set up a test forum.

In the meantime, I still to ask the question:

In the AdminCP it reads the following:
"To rebuild the search index . . . This can be done via Maintenance > Update Counters. Reindex can take a long time for large boards."

Question 1: How long does the REINDEX of the Search supposed to take for a forum that only has 500,000 posts? 2 days? If there is something I am missing, please let me know.

      Thank you,

      David

        1. There is no way to give you a time limit on how long it should take, as many factors go into that time amount of threads/posts, hardware resources & sql configuration can speed it up.

        2. Yes, if your server is running out of hardware resources, its not going to respond to other functions.

        3. No

        4. Lack of server resources & mis-configuration in sql

What is your opinion on the following "warning" comment:

Nothing, it states a simple warning, run 0.9.9 or higher.

I have 560,000 posts and it took several miserable hours when I was connected, personally, on a very slow internet connection.

The second I connected the computer to a fast wifi, the indexing took about 10 minutes.

I have no idea why my local speed played such a role, but it did.

I've done 500,000 posts in under an hour or two, and I've seen it take hours (3+).

System performance is the largest factor in how fast it gets rebuilt to a point.
