[Forum] Problem with Facebook Like button on threads

I tried the like button on 4.2 for the first time and found it gives the wrong link.

I gave a link of the forum http://www.teslamotorsclub.com/showt...dster-totalled

Instead of http://www.teslamotorsclub.com/showt...dster-totalled

How do I fix this?

Btw, I tried the like button on blogs and that seems to work ok. Though, when I go to my facebook page, it shows a blank spot where I think there's supposed to be a thumbnail image. How is that supposed to work?

Ok, that fix didn't work. The facebook link still adds an extra "/showthread.php".

Please help.

So any help here? Any idea why the like button is not using the correct URL?

Both links you gave above are showing as invalid threads. Please show example with a valid thread.

I suggest using the Facebook Debugger to see what facebook "sees" on one of your thread URLs- it can be very informative:

Sorry. I had copy and pasted the incorrect link from my facebook page and then edited to remove the extra "showthread.php". It removed it from the text but not the hyperlink. Fixed in edit.


As of now, the Like button work's properly on some pages, but not others.

So it works here:

But on this page:

It adds an extra "showtread.php" in the URL when I view the link on Facebook.

The facebook developer tools seems to show the site just fine.

I shared the 2nd link (http://www.teslamotorsclub.com/showt...-being-updated) on my Facebook wall and it worked fine. Are you still having the issue?

No idea, why it's working now. It went from not working at all, to working on a few links. Now the ones that I found didn't work before now work. No idea what's going on.

I'm in the process of using the Suspect File Versions tool to identify and clear out files from old versions of vB and old plugins. Maybe that's helping.

Ok, here's a thread where as of just a few moments ago the Like button is adding an extra "/showthread.php" in the URL.

Still works for me... Let me ask- how do you know this is happening- are you sharing them on your Facebook timeline?

Yeah, I share them on my timeline. Also when I hit Like, I see my forum title come up instead of the title of the thread.

AND......... that link now works for me.

A friend suggested what I'm seeing is Facebook caching. Facebook indexes a page once. So someone (likely me with my testing) could have Liked this page before it got fixed recently. Facbeook doesnt crawl the page again until you tell it to or use the debug tool. So it's basically like clearing a cache on a browser.


The ones that are broken are ones that I (or someone) tried liking before it was fixed.

Very plausible to me.. If it keeps happening PM me your facebook link (if you want) and I will either see it or friend you and see it to see if I can figure anything out.

Thanks, Joe. I think it's working for the most part now. I'm not sure if it's from the files I removed. It might also be that I turned on Facebook Connect. Seems like the Facebook Open Graph stuff isn't turned on until you enable Facebook Connect. So the Like button by itself doesn't work so well.
