    Site died

My site died today, and i'm not sure what's happened/ing to it.

It all started with me having my host move me to a different server. Should have known something would go wrong.
So once it had moved the site came back up after the DNS changes, my site was redirecting to the install folder but because it didn't exist it couldn't find the page. I wasn't sure what was happening, so I attempted to restore the database, it is only 40Mb in size.

Various attempts to restore the database, phpmyadmin, SQL, sql dumper, etc all failed and as a result the database was damaged as it went from 40Mb to 3.52Mb.

After speaking with my host they indicated the likely issue is that the new server has PHP 5.5, and if my database is several years old, which it is, then the password hash is old and it isn't liking it. He said the likely solution is to either change the password for the account connected to the database, or just create a new user account and associate it with the db, then updated the vbulletin config.php.

Well, sounds like a simple solution, but came too late as my database was already messed up.

But after creating a new user account, linking it to the database, then updating the config.php and then trying to restore the database again it seemed to work, however, it worked way too quick for my liking. The 40Mb database was restored within a minute. However, the database then slightly dropped to 38.9MB and remained there.

Then the next thing I know my site appears like this: http://www.gamerperfection.com

Then I lose complete access to the server cpanel as it doesn't accept the username and password for it anymore.

And so I also lose FTP access.

Now I sit and wait to hear from my host.

Seems like they moved me back to my old server and my database restored to 30th August. Not all bad, disappointing about the server move and I lost some data and a couple of user accounts since 30th Aug. But better than losing the site entirely.

Just reading up on your woes... PHP 5.5 doesn't exist yet... the latest version is PHP 5.4 but vBulletin isn't compatible with PHP 5.4, the max PHP version you can use on vBulletin 5.3.x.

Perhaps you host said (or meant to say) MySQL 5.5 which is the current MySQL version.

You should go to your (now working) Admin CP and at the top it will tell you what version of MySQL (and PHP) you are currently running. Then you can look up/google if your version of MySQL needs to have the databases upgraded between versions.

Hi, didn't realise you had replied to this. I made a mistake, my host said PHP 5.3.17 and MySQL 5.5.

Currently I have PHP 5.2.17 and MySQL 5.0.95-community. I've looked on Google and all I have found so far is references to upgrading MySQL to 5.5 and no mention of the databases themselves.

From what I read you can export the vBulletin database (and only the vBulletin database) from your existing MySQL 5.0.95 database and Import it into your new MySQL 5.5 server without issue. The only thing that is not compatible is the mysql database itself which holds stuff like usernames and permissions (for MySQL, not vBulletin.)

That is why you can't copy all databases over the mysql database won't be compatible with MySQL 5.5.

So Export the vBulletin database to a .SQL file.... Go to your new server, assuming you already have MSQL setup, import the SQL file you created, and then (optionally) create a new username/password with all privileges to the vBulletin database- and that is the username/passowrd you use in the new config.php file.

How do you export a vbulletin database? What I did last time was I went in to my MySQL through my cpanel and exported the database that I use for my site. Is that right?

Go to cpanel, go to phpmyadmin, go to the specific database vBulletin is installed in, go to "Export" and you can export all tables in the database as an SQL file...

Depending on the size of the file and the settings on the new server you can likely go to phpmyadmin on the new server, create a new vbulletin database, it will be blank... Go to IMPORT and import the file, it will import all the tables and data.

If the SQL file is too big to import via phpmyadmin (too big to upload) then you will need a utility like bigdump to import the data.

I'll give that a try next time I try and get my host to move me to a different server. I think i'll wait though until I get vB5 with CMS. Thanks.
