For the left/right collapse action add this to your additional.css template:
Code:#sidebar_button {display:none;}
Code:#sidebar_container a.collapse {display:none;}

FORUMHOME would not affect the forum blocks shown in thread view though, would it?

The additional.css is a template. The page you're trying to edit with that error is no longer valid.
Styles & Template -> Style Manager.
Click on <<>> for your template.
Scroll to CSS Templates, Double Click to open.
Double click additional.css to edit it.Translations provided by Google.
