  • [Forum] url question for my site

    Hello again,

I have realized another problem that I am having on my forum / site.

In Google's webmaster tools, I have specified the domain to be the www.myforum.com version and not the http://myforum.com version, in an attempt to not have double content.

So that is how urls appear, is with the www. in front of the domain name.

However, if I remove the www. in front of the domain name in the url bar... it takes me to http://myforum.com

When it takes me there, the screen looks like I am no longer logged in, in the upper right hand corner. It has empty boxes for log in.

But if I then click any link, it takes me back to the www. version, and I can see my user name and profile links again in the upper right hand corner.

I checked this same problem on other VB forums like this one, to see if it is a problem with other sites as well. It is not.

When you erase the www. on the url of the forum, it immediately puts the www. back to keep the url the same. My forum is not doing that, so it is a problem that I am having.

Could someone guide me in the right direction for correcting this? Thanks again,

Best thing to do is to create a redirect in an .htaccess file to drive all traffic to one version of the domain, the same as you have entered here:

AdminCP > Settings > Options > Site Name / URL / Contact Details > Forum URL
    Vote for:

    - *Admin Settable Paid Subscription Reminder Timeframe*
    -
*PM - Add ability to reply to originator only*
    - Add Admin ability to auto-subscribe users to specific channel(s)
    - "Quick Route" Interface...

I have done barely anything at all with my .htaccess file. The one thing I did do doesn't seem to have worked.

I tried to block Google from indexing user profile pages, and now google indexed one of my user profile's page as the freaking index! .. when I search my url name.

So I don't what the hell happened there but it sucks. I really need to get my user profiles off of google, before people start running away from my forum.

Anyway, would you mind telling me the exact code to put in the .htaccess file? in order to redirect all traffic to one version of the domain?

If so, I would really really appreciate it, as I am beginning to realize that my forum has more issues than I originally realized!

EDIT! : Scratch that last comment. I just realized that I created a robots.txt file and not a .htaccess file.

I don't even have a .htaccess file yet that I can see. SO that's good.

I placed the following code, as suggested here on this board, in my robots.txt file previously to not allow google to index the user profile pages. It hasn't worked yet unfortunately.

      Code:
      Disallow: /forums/member.php
That is literally the only line of code in my robots.txt file right now, and it doesn't seem to be doing what I want it to do...

Anyway, so I guess I need to create a .htaccess file as well now... I'm learning slowly....

      EDIT AGAIN:

how about the following line of code in the .htaccess file would that do the trick you think?

      Code:
      Redirect myforum.net http://www.myforum.net
      or I guess maybe

      Code:
      Redirect myforum.net www.myforum.net
      Redirect http://myforum.net http://www.myforum.net
which has both of the options...

http://www.myforum.net is what is in AdminCP > Settings > Options > Site Name / URL / Contact Details > Forum URL
