  • [Forum] Members being logged out

I am having an issue with my members just being logged out. I have found this will always happen if the member does not tick the remember me option when they log in. This seems to be after a very shout time and they are saying it happens when they are busy posting and when they select submit it will return and tell them they are not logged in.

Have you checked the "how long members stay logged in" time at ACP>Cookies and HTTP Header Options ?

was set to 300 I have changed it to 1800 now but I would have thought that 300 would be about right. Any suggestions on a value I should use here

        I would suggest two things:

        1) Get your users to use the "Remember Me" option during the login process.
        2) 1800 = 30 Minutes, I prefer to use at a bare minimum, 2 hours (7200)

        Hope this helps.

Yes the regular members know that they should use the remember me option but when we have new registration this is when the issue comes in as the new member does not know this. We do have a thread in the forum information area but as you know reading the instructions is the last thing members do. I have now changed it to 7200 as suggested but what I don't like this directly affects the who's online then so you cannot get a true reflection of who is online

It's trade off, I prefer the longer time to save from getting complaints about getting logged out in the middle of typing a long post. (i.e. get a phone call, away from the PC for some other reason...) Two hours seems to work for us. You can drop it to one hour if you're more worried about the Who's Online status. In our case, keeping the session active is more important than the Who's online.

At any rate, you can adjust it as you see fit... adjust it to whatever fits your needs and your user's needs.

FYI, the default value for that setting is 900, or 15 minutes.

Please don't PM or VM me for support - I only help out in the threads.

If I post CSS and you don't know where it goes, throw it into the additional.css template.

It's all in seconds. Takes a little math to figure out how many minutes or hours you want your members logged in. When the cookie expires, poof, next thing you do gives you the not logged in message. Doesn't appear to apply to admins though. I stay logged in to my forum until I manually log out.
