  • [CMS] Avatars with Transparent background no longer show transparent after 4.1.7 upgrade?

hmmm in 4.1.5 avatars showed up in the recent post widget with their transparent background, after the update to 4.1.7 they retain the transparent background in posts, but in the recent posts widget and other places they lost their transparent background?

Anybody else experience this, or know if there's something I can do to fix this?

This is probably due to the fact that the widgets now use a thumbnail of the avatar that gets created.

Please don't PM or VM me for support - I only help out in the threads.

If I post CSS and you don't know where it goes, throw it into the additional.css template.

They did not do this in 4.1.5 as well?

No, this is a 4.1.7 change.

Ok well now I'm actually more confused because I recently noticed not all avatars lost their transparency on the recent posts widget. Only some have.

          For instance,

          http://flotgaming.net/forums/customa...atar1168_5.gif

no longer has a transparent background
          Dimensions 60 × 60
          File size 5.46KB
          MIME type image/gif

Usergroup Custom Avatar Maximum File-Size (bytes): 200000

          While,

          http://flotgaming.net/forums/customavatars/thumbs/avatar1564_1.gif

          retained it's transparent background
          Dimensions 60 × 70
          File size 2.28KB
          MIME type image/gif

Usergroup Custom Avatar Maximum File-Size (bytes): 20000

This doesn't seem to make sense?

The first one was resized and the second one wasn't.

If you have Imagemagick on your server it may be able to resize GIF images as true GIF images and maintain the transparency. If you're using GD, there is no way to do this.

Bummer, I'm using a mod to create CSS sprites, that requires GD.

I'm confused why they were re-sized in the first place?. If the functionality already existed to show a smaller version without duplicating the image. Why was it changed to have every custom avatar duplicated only to shrink them down marginally and display them in the same size they had been previously in 4.1.5?

The change is due to a bug fix that was applied to images in articles. I guess they applied it to all uploaded images, sorry.

Thankfully I have both Imagemagick and GD. So it was just a matter of switching in the VB settings and rebuilding the custom avatars. Still kinda silly that the powers that be decided it was a good idea to do this, when the system in place for custom avatars didn't force issues like this to crop up in 4.1.5.
