    We've just changed our search to accommodate a 3 letter search from the standard 4 letter with the help from our providers.
    If we upgrade from the present 4.1.4 to any future vBulletin version, will we have any problems because of the search changes to our database and will any updates take us back to a 4 letter word limit again !?

    No, upgrading will not change that.

    Note: vB4 uses MySQL fulltext search and this has a 4 character minimum word length by default. This can only be changed on the server level. There are also a number of 'stopwords' that are considered common and not indexed.
