[Forum] Getting killed with spam even with recaptcha and email verification.... Why???

I am deleting 20-80 users a day, I am using the recaptcha and email verification.
How are so many fake users getting in to spam?

It was worse when I was using the image verification and even the question and answer verification.
My question was "The south lake of tween lakes"
Answer "Woods"
How would anyone but the owners in tween lakes know what I was talking about even.


I can not deal with so many spam users and threads when the forum is only for 80-100 users in the first place, it makes a huge mess very fast.

I have not changed any of the vb code anywhere, I have no added on any vb ad on anything. If it was not in the zip file right from VB it is not on my forum. I have not changed any code anywhere in the admin.

In Q & A you have to arrange the questions so that only someone fluent in English can read them easily e.g.

The recaptcha is working the best, but bots still getting in.
Something has to be wrong.

Use questions and answers with email verification.

I think you need to have an assortment of questions so the bots do not know what question they will get

There are currently 7 members. For some reason I can't see a person taking the time to Google the lake names for the bots. And I just Googled it, I know what I am looking for and it wasn't easy to find.


I switched to recaptcha... supposedly bots can not beat this. But yet I still have to clear bot users and posts. Just before I posted this I cleaned out 117 bot users from the last two days.
And since when do bots reply to the email verification too?


I still think something else has to be wrong.

I guess no one, but it is pretty damn popular with some pretty huge sites if it sucks....

Do you know which one is south? hell even telling the bot both and have half the attempt's fail still doesn't make sense for a tiny member base.

This is really all besides the point since I am using recaptcha.


On that note, How many bots do you have sign up to your sites?
how many on here?
how many on any vb site?

Is every site getting 20+ bots a day becoming members and actually posting? Are sites getting 20 bots per 7 actual members per day?





For fun sake right now I have have question and answer set.
The answer is 150+ random random characters, with some special characters.
If I get a bot something is VERY wrong.

I see two - as a human I can guess(50-50 chance) or google again to find out... once I know the answer as there is only one question I can tell the bots the right answer...

Not one.

Human spammers: 1-2 per month.

yep none for me... I have around 20 questions set up - so the chance of same one twice in a row is pretty low I guess... and they are not stuff with a google answer...

I have one Q and A and email verification enabled. I get 1 or 2 spammers a month. When I was using recaptcha I was getting killed daily.
The key to Q and A working is to pose the question in a manner that just persons interested in your subject matter would know the right answer. Not too hard and not too easy. Are there any haunting stories about the lakes that are not published? Try going that route...
