    If you've not modified the core vB files, I wouldn't worry about backing them up as you can always download and keep a copy of the original ZIP file from the Members Area. If you're storing attachments, avatars and profile images in your filesystem then you should back these up.

    The most reliable method of backing upa database is with shell access via ssh. This is because backing up with a PHP script like phpMyAdmin can result in PHP timeouts errors and an incomplete backup file. Please see the instructions here:

    I need some help backing up my website

    I'm not sure if I'm backing up my database correctly. I've been using my FTP (WS_FTP) and transferring over all the files into a specific folder. That method is not working for me very well anymore, seems the session will time out and fail.

    I've read the manual, and have Cpanel. So I've tried using that per the instructions. Seems the file always opens in a wordpad format when I try to view it. I'm not confident that I'm doing it correctly that way either.

    Could someone help me on my quest to backing up my website, easily and more importantly, correctly? I don't expect anyone to sit down and walk me through it, just a general overview, a few key websites with downloads, and key points.
