Is there any way to only have a user profile field completed during registration and not profile updating?

Yes, in User Profile Field Manager:

Field Required
Yes, at Registration and Profile Updating

Field Editable by User
Only at Registration

Private Field
Yes

Field Searchable on Members List
No

Show on Members List
No

Then go to Usergroups and make sure that their usergroup cannot see Private Fields in General Permissions>Can View Private Custom Fields>No

This results in:
They must enter data in the field at registration but cannot change it later in Profile Updating.

Should the user wish to change the data at a later stage, they'd have to contact you or your staff.

Pros and Cons? Er, not quite sure what you mean here but I'll give you an example of how mine works...
At registration, my registrants have to already own a Membership Number that is bought via our National Club site.
This number is then entered on our Local Club site, their details can then be verified back and forth.
Since our Membership numbers never change, they stay with that user for life, there's no reason why the user would need to change it at any point going forwards.

Thanks for that, the 'usergroup' setting was already set so I imagine this was a default setting.
