[Forum] Mod_rewrite urls not working

I have been trying to install the mod_rewrite url from the control panel settings. I have selected the mod rewrite option in the URL Type within friendly url and also uploaded the .htacces file to the forums root directory. Even after that my url looks something like http://forums.techhotfix.com/threads...7?goto=newpost (why the url contains ?goto=newpost) but when i click this link from the index page and i am redirected to the thread. After this when i click on the threads title i get a url which does not contain ?goto=newpost. Please help what am i missing
