I would have to say both, I use eclcforum.net without the www I cannot be exactly sure what the user links are, but I would think they are a mix of both
After reading your question I realized that I needed to set the cookie domain when I went to the cookie domain settings there is now a choice of (blank) and .eclcforum.net which I have chosen to see if it resolves the cookie issue.

Are you/users using a combination of yoursite.com and www.yoursite.com or all going to the one version of your URL?

My members and myself are having a problem after doing a upgrade to 4.0.5. when you login you get the re direction page and when back on forum you are not logged in, if you repeat the login process the same thing happens, clearing cookies, clearing cache trying a different browser does not help. IE, Opera, Chrome all have he same problem, members state that if they do get to login each time they navigate to another page they have to re login, after one or two times they fall into the not be logged in state and cannot use the forum.
Info - cookie domain suggested choice is (blank) ?
