  • [Forum] How to add blocks to Sidebar in forum and changing background colours in calander et.

    Hi,

    I have finally started work on porting my vb3.8.5 forum over to vb4.0.4PL1 as I was waiting for things to settle down a bit and it wasn't at a stage that I felt comfortable with trying to use on my live site.

    I have pretty much worked out a few things, but there are some things that I can't figure out. One is how to add other specific blocks to the Side Bar on the right of the forum other than the ones that are listed, which are actually quite minimal. I am specifically looking at how to add a User Information block which will also allow members to login through there as having the login right up the top on the right for a few of my members is not as noticeable for them. I run a photography website and a lot of the members aren't that young as well, so trying to make things a bit easier for them. Currently no my 3.8.5 version there is a Sidebar add-on that has this built into it with the product. Works great but doesn't look like the person that wrote the plugin is going to do something similar for vB4. It is from a person I believe in Vietnam. It also has forum stats as part of the Sidebar.

    I have been able to get my ads in the side similar to what I currently have, I have also got recent forum threads displaying as well. But it would be good to be able to know how to add other blocks other than the ones that are stock standard. Are there going to be other blocks added in the future to make it easier for clients to activate them, especially for those of us that aren't coders and php knowledgeable as well.

    The other thing I have been trying to figure out is how to change the background in the Calendar area as well. Currently it is darkish grey as I am creating a theme look that I want to use for my site as the overall look is greyish specifically for viewing photos online, it is easier and less distracting for critiquing or when judges are judging competitions. The greys won't be the same but similar across the site.

    The Stylevars PDF file is great but I wish that it was done from a top down point of view than chopping and changing around the page as it currently does. I also don't think that all the Stylevars are covered in it either.

    Thanks in advance for any assistance with these questions.
    Thanks,

    Peter

      Hi Peter,

      Responses do differ depending on each persons time, and styling takes the longest to answer. I will attempt to answer your specific aspects.

      These are listed within the ACP under:

      ACP > Forums & Moderators > Forum Blocks Manager > Add Block

      You can add a range of defaults along with custom HTML & PHP.

      You can change your login around, however; the default data as below within the header template will only partially work. All the template conditionals, raw phrase, etc, won't work as they haven't been registered to work sitewide in any place. You would have to write custom conditionals that are global and word the phrases yourself, style it within the block, etc. It can be done, but you are going to have to know how to write some basic CSS. Quite honestly, if you want something like a snazzy login that is bold and stands out, your better off to go too someone like Minerz at http://www.minerskinz.com/vbulletin.html and ask him how much just for a custom login, all designed and complete.

      HTML Code:
      <vb:if condition="$show['member']">
      			<ul class="isuser">
      				<li><a href="login.php?{vb:raw session.sessionurl}do=logout&amp;logouthash={vb:raw bbuserinfo.logouthash}" onclick="return log_out('{vb:rawphrase sure_you_want_to_log_out}')">{vb:rawphrase log_out}</a></li>
      				<vb:if condition="$show['registerbutton']">
      				<li><a href="register.php{vb:raw session.sessionurl_q}" rel="nofollow">{vb:rawphrase register}</a></li>
      				</vb:if>

      <!-- Lots of code inbetween -->
      				</li>

      				<vb:if condition="$vboptions['enablefacebookconnect']">
      					{vb:raw facebook_header}
      				</vb:if>
      			</ul>
      		</vb:if>

      Have you looked through vbulletin.org? There are custom widgets already built, that may only require styling, to achieve your aim. There are a few template mods that can also change the look of the login, ie:

      http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=238152
      http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=233813
      http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=233614

      Also if you look in vb4 mods, drop the prefix box down and search on forum blocks, cms widgets, etc, you will quickly find custom solutions outside off default to put within blocks and widgets.

      calendar_othermonth_background_color changes the grey used on some aspects. You need to be a bit more specific please with what exact areas. If you use firefox with firebug addon, you will quickly be able to isolate the exact identifier or take a snapshot and point out with graphics the specific areas, as some areas don't come from the calendar.css stylesheet or stylevars. Yes... one of those things we are waiting on with the style rewrite. Easily fixed though if you can identify the specific areas, as I the specific rewrite additions can be isolated to overwrite default values.

        Thanks Anthony I will have another look at this tomorrow, a bit tired after upgrading the site and getting it all working again. I'm not a coder so am really looking for add-ons and have done some searches, keeps telling me that the search string is less than 3 words, when it isn't, so I troll through all the pages and hopefully pick up the ones that might work.

        The Calendar area I am meaning is when you have a current month open or current day and the background of each day.
        Thanks,

        Peter

          To change the background on daily events, you need to add the following CSS to your additional.css. If you want to keep the "other month" squares differently coloured, then you need to apply both the below, in the exact order stated here, to the additional.css. If you want them all the same colour, drop the second one noting the other month background colour.

          HTML Code:
          .calendar .events {
          background-color: #333333;
          }
          .calendar .othermonth {
          background-color: #ffffff;
          }
          If you wanted to also change the highlighted colour for "today", then you would add this one last:

          HTML Code:
          .calendar .today {
          background-color: #000000;
          }
          Obviously you change the hex color values to what you want the colour to be.
