I too can't edit main.css, but I really need to change "Popup Menu Highlighted Option" .

Does anyone know how to do this in the styles var? I can't find it.

You need to use the styles var. The Main CSS is obsolete in 4.0. What you need is in the common styles var. Either doc background or body background
