  • [Forum] Hello all quick question

I have noticed that i get a lot of what seems like bot sign-ups, they sign-up then try and post some erroneous post about an off topic post, but they always have a signature that points to a Viagra site or something like that.
I was wondering are they real people using signatures to spam, or is it a bot system getting past the captcha system that vb uses?

If so is that why people use the better paid captcha system or what. I simply allow them to sign up but i don't allow signatures on a registered class, this forces them to post like 30 times then i dump them into a higher class that does allow the use of signatures.

    Any thoughts

I use a two stage verification for registration, and then new members aren't allowed to use signatures or the PM system until they reach the magic post count. At that point, they're automatically promoted to full member status.

Many times, a real person will do the registration, then turn the bot loose in the forums.

well by disallowing the signature i have stopped the spam in signatures, seems to be the preferred method of this type of bot system. now if they actually start posting spam i will try something different for sure.
