  • [Forum] User banning - How to handle gmail style "+" email

    Hi,
If I understand correctly, gmail allows users to quickly create multiple additional emails using the "+" character. For example, if my gmail address was [email protected], I could also use [email protected], [email protected], etc...

Is there a way to ban all these using a wildcard such as spammer*@gmail.com?

If not, are the only options to ban all gmail addresses or the user's IP?

Add + to the email ban and turn on agressive email banning.

      Thanks Zachery,
I hadn't thought of that. But if I understand correctly, that will ban all emails that contain the "+" character, so [email protected] would also be banned, right?

Yes, but how many users do you have now with a + in their name?

Is it possible to show banned users IP addresses en masse?

We have a similar problem. As with you they are mainly gmail addresses, some obviously porn or spammers, some not so obvious, often variations on the same name. What we do is validate all the users individually and don't let them in until we've got a positive id. If we don't get a response to the emails we add the user to the banned list (using the permanent ban option) so we have a permanent record of previous miscreants.

Generally the numbers are low enough to be tolerable but when we get a flurry it's usually from the same IP address, which shows up in "users awaiting moderation". When we see this we email the offending IP address to the people who manage our firewall and get them to block everything for that IP address, which ends the problem. We'd like to be able to review all the IP addresses we've logged for banned users so that we can spot more of the duplicates as they don't show up in the list of banned users in order that we can then add them to the firewall. Any idea how we do this?
